The Southern Lakes Academy is an alternative high school designed for students who are at risk of not completing high school if an appropriate educational intervention is not implemented. Students make application to attend the Academy and complete the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) as a placement tool. Students and parent/guardian, are interviewed by the Dean of students and placed in the Academy if it is determined to be appropriate.

ACADEMY FEATURES AND STRENGTHS

    1.Applied learning (contextually based) instructional delivery system.

    2. Six, three week marking periods, per semester for immediate feedback.
    3. Competency based, A,B,C, NO Credit Grading System.
    4. Self-paced learning environment in many classes.
    5. Experiential learning emphasized
    6. Prescriptive classes for students in need of mathematics and language skill development.
    9. Applied Biology, Chemistry & Physical science curriculum.
    10. Accelerated Mathematics Program (students move at their own pace).
    11. Strong communications curriculum.
    12. 100 % of teaching staff possess valid Michigan Teacher Certificate and are highly qualified.
    13. Required, one or two year, Career-Technical Program of instruction.
    14. Strong parental contact component.
    15. Students participate in intramural sports , student awards, fields trips, and community service activities throughout the school year.
    16. 22 Credits Required for graduation.
