Auto Mechanics


The Automotive Technology program will introduce students to the basic shop safety practices and procedures. Students will receive hands-on experience with brakes, engine overhaul, fuel systems, suspension, tire balancing, automatic and manual transmissions, etc. Students will prepare to complete State of Michigan Automotive Certification tests for all areas.


Instructional Topics:

Automotive Technology I: (2 credits)

  • Basic orientation to shop safety practices and procedures
  • Braking Systems
  • Electricity/Electronics
  • Gasoline engine overhaul
  • Complete fuel systems
  • General maintenance services
  • Tire Balancing and Repair
  • All completing students will be scheduled to take a State of Michigan Automotive Certification test for all areas of

 

Automotive Technology II: (2 credits)

  • Basic orientation to shop safety practices and procedures
  • Use high tech automotive equipment
  • Diagnosis and repair of malfunctions of all makes and models
  • Continuation of NATEF/ASE brake, and electrical/electronics requirements
  • Suspension and front alignments
  • Tune up and engine performance
  • Heating and air conditioning
  • Automatic and manual transmissions
  • Drive trains

Program Prerequisites

Students must have completed the 10th grade of high school. Automotive Technology II pre-requisite: Automotive Technology I and Instructor recommendation.

State certification is required for all persons working in positions as specialty mechanics or master mechanics in the State of Michigan. Students enrolled in the Automotive Technology program will have the opportunity to take the state license exams.

 

 

Entry-level Automotive Technicians can earn an hourly wage of $10 to $25 per hour, depending on their experience. Technicians can earn commission based on labor costs paid by customers. Wages for technicians earning comission will depend upon the amount of work completed, although many employers do guarantee a minimum salary.

$20,000-$40,000
Annual Average Salary:
$25,000-$35,000

Technicians highly skilled, managers, and shop forepersons
Annual salary range: Up to $100,000

Earn College Credit

In addition to the high school credits, students can earn the following college credits with these institutions.

Students maintaining a 2.5-3.0 GPA will earn college credits toward Mott Community College, Baker College, Ferris State University, and University of Northwestern Ohio. Articulation credits are based on individual students and college programs
